National Gallery Victoria

Global Vision produced a three minute promo to launch the 2008 Masterpieces for Melbourne Fundraising Campaign, and for release to the media. It’s aim was to inspire and educate, to raise awareness of the NGV’s need to purchase new works for its collections and remain competitive as one of the world’s great art galleries. Working with Cate Blanchett, Geoffery Rush, Claudia Karvan, Fred Schepisi, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, Loti Smorgon and several members of the NGV, Global created a visually striking piece using sweeping camera movement to explore the beautiful art and space of the NGV.

For the last 100 years, the National Gallery of Victoria has relied on the Felton Bequest to purchase a large portion of its collection. Contrary to popular belief, no government money is provided for purchases for the collection itself. With the skyrocketing prices paid for masterpieces at auction since the 1950s, the buying power of the bequest has dwindled, and an urgent injection of donations is required for the NGV to remain a key cultural landmark.

The Gallery has set a target to raise $M 150 by the year 2011 - the 150th birthday of the NGV. Masterpieces for Melbourne is a major public campaign to publicise the needs of the gallery and to encourage a new generation of donors to step forward and support the NGV.

The NGV holds collections that are more detailed than any other in Australia which tell the story of the visual culture of mankind. The NGV plans to concentrate its new collections on the contemporary and traditional art of Oceania and the Asia Pacific region.

On the strength of the reputation we earned when filming for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, the NGV sought out Global Vision Media for this project. The client's earlier experience was that we were able to deliver high quality with rapid turnaround and limited budget.

Global Vision Media were tasked with creating a concept for a video to play at the campaign launch on the 21st of May, and for subsequent forums. The video we created is being used now to raise awareness of Gallery's needs. The video features Dame Elizabeth Murdoch, a long standing philanthropist and advocate for contenpory art and the NGV, Loti Smorgon AO, who described it as a "privilege to support the National Gellery of Victoria", Prominent Melbourne QC Alan Myers, The Gallery's director Gerard Vaughan, Actor Geoffrey Rush, Cinema Director Fred Schepisi, Actor Claudia Karvan, Actor Cate Blanchett, and students from Wesley College who highlighted the role of the Gallery as an educator in our community.

The Global Vision Media crew produced, scripted, filmed, musically scored and edited a major video production that was received with acclaim at a launch attended by prominent art supporters from around the country, including the premier of Victoria, John Brumby.
